Ghanteebati can be medium or thick walled, but are usually thick and heavy. they can be large and small but small 'cup' bowls are very rare. Very bowls usually have very thick thick walls and can be embellished with ritual slash marks or dot punch marks.
Excellent bowls for therapy, they have good energy and feel alive when played in the hand. Larger bowls of similar frequency can achieve fantastic entrainment.
Rim play is always very easy.
Some Ghanteebati are ancient. Most are around 100-200 years old, with the very thick walled examples being up to 500 years old.
The bowls come from Karnataka, a state in southwest India. Hampi, once the medieval Vijayanagara empire’s capital, contains ruins of Hindu temples, elephant stables and a stone chariot.
The bowls can be dual texture, some with lines outside and inside, circles inside, smooth sided or showing hammer marks. All Ghanteebati have a flat bottom and gently sloping bell shaped sides. They sit well on cushion pads and play well with wool mallet and felt strikers.
